Dealing with a brain injury and substance misuse as a young man, with the support of N-Able.
Situation
Following a brain injury at 17, I struggled to cope and everything was a bit of a mess, though I didn’t see it at the time. I struggled to accept support and ended up in hospital several times. I was angry and would hit out at those around me, and was in court more than once, but I did not understand why.
Solution
I was able to choose a Case Manager, who took time to get to know me and understand what I wanted. Although we clashed at times, she would always explain situations to me, providing me with choice and advice. She helped me see the benefits of engaging with my rehab programme, helped me manage my money better and helped me understand the importance of structure. The relationship has continued even after my claim settled.
Outcome
With engaging in the rehab programme, I was able to better understand my injury and my actions, which helped me see those actions which were harmful to me. My substance use has decreased dramatically, as have my outbursts and court appearances!
I now have more control over my money and decision making and have my own flat with some support. I have got to know the team at N-Able and know they are always there when I need them.
